Canon publishes 4K patent – with intent to develop

Canon released 4K patent filing

What will Canon's new 4K camera be?

A document released recently sheds light on Canon’s patent filing for a 4k compressed raw output camera. Specifically it appears that the main aspects of the patent are as follows:

  • Designed for compatibility with CF cards
  • Supports 4K and 2K video (4K is 4096×2048)
  • Works with Bayer CMOS sensor (like the one in a RED or DSLR)
  • Sensor output is 12bit

I have a gut feeling that Canon is not one to be outdone by a small company like RED in the 4k market. They are nobody’s fool and they have a TON of marketing muscle, and can afford to roll out a great camera for a thinner profit margin. It will be interesting to see, and since I’m planning on selling my Scarlet in March, I will definitely be keeping an eye out for any more Canon announcements.
